Capacity Desktop

Capacity Desktop is the first app builder in this category to say the quiet part out loud: the credit system is a margin business, and you’re the margin. It’s a free Mac app that turns plain English into a working app on your own machine, and it doesn’t sell you tokens. You plug in your existing Claude, GPT, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek or Kimi account and pay your provider directly, at their rate. A built-in dashboard shows what you’ve actually spent.

The team behind it — Baptiste Studer and Samuel Rondot, who’ve been shipping the cloud version of Capacity since 2025 — posted on Product Hunt asking whether building an app builder with nothing to sell was “smart or stupid.” It’s a fair question. It’s also the most interesting pricing decision anyone in this space has made this year.

What it actually does

You pick from 80+ designer templates or start blank. A guided setup names the project and wires up your GitHub and Vercel accounts. Then you describe what you want, and — this is the good part — Capacity writes a plain-English spec of the feature before it writes any code. You read it, correct it, then let it build. Live preview runs inside the app while it works.

Every AI step gets snapshotted, so a bad turn is one click to undo, and restoring an old version doesn’t nuke your newer work. Publishing is a single button that checks your production settings, pushes to your repo, and follows the deploy until the URL is live.

Your project is a normal folder and a normal git repo on your disk. Open it in Cursor, hand it to a contractor, or walk away — nothing is held hostage.

Where it falls down

It’s Mac-only right now. The marketing page says “macOS & Windows,” the download button says “Download for Mac,” and independent reviews put Windows on the roadmap rather than in the build. Assume Apple Silicon only until the download page says otherwise.

Bring-your-own-key is a real barrier. If you don’t already have an Anthropic or OpenAI account with billing set up, “free” means “free after you go do a technical setup task.” That’s the single biggest reason the non-coder rating here is a 3 and not a 4. It’s also why the pitch lands hardest with people who’ve already burned a month of Lovable credits and got angry about it.

Build speed depends on your machine. Cloud builders throw a datacentre at your prompt. This one throws your laptop at it.

It’s new. Launched August 5, 2026, still effectively in beta, with a small team. Don’t put a business-critical build on it yet.

The bottom line

If you’re already paying $20–200/month to Anthropic or OpenAI, Capacity Desktop removes the second bill you’ve been paying to use those same models inside a builder. That’s a genuinely good deal, and the spec-first workflow is better product thinking than most of the credit-funded competition ships.

But it’s early, it’s Mac-only, and the setup asks more of you than Lovable does. Try it as a second tool alongside whatever you already use. Don’t migrate your only project to it this month.
