What a vibe coding service actually is
A vibe coding service is any person or team that uses AI-assisted development tools to build software on a client's behalf. The output is real, running software, not a Figma mockup and not a static prototype. The tools vary: Lovable, Bolt, Cursor, Windsurf, Replit, and Claude Code are all common in the stack. What distinguishes these providers from traditional dev agencies is the economics: because AI tools compress the time to scaffold, iterate, and ship, a skilled vibe coder can build a functional MVP in days rather than weeks, and that speed gets passed on, at least partly, as cost savings.
What it does not change: the need for clear product thinking, proper architecture decisions, and a real understanding of what you're building. The AI does the typing. If a quote looks dramatically cheaper than these bands, assume you're being sold a prototype, not a product. And ask traditional dev shops directly: "How much of the code is AI-generated, and what does your review process look like?" Some pass the AI savings on; others charge the rates they always did.
What a good engagement delivers
Before you can evaluate a provider, you need to know what you're paying for. A quality vibe coding engagement should deliver:
- Deployable, version-controlled code, in a GitHub repository you own, not a link to a builder project the provider controls.
- Working authentication and data handling, with properly implemented auth and row-level security, and no shortcuts that leave user data exposed.
- Basic documentation: how to run it locally, what environment variables it needs, how to deploy.
- A handover session: a walkthrough of what was built, how it's structured, and where to go when things break.
- Post-delivery support: at least two weeks of bug fixes for issues that surface after launch.
Red flags before you hire
The market is young, unregulated, and full of providers who know just enough to be convincing in a sales call. Walk away when:
- They can't explain architectural decisions. "Why Supabase over Firebase?" should get a real answer; "what's Supabase?" should end the call.
- Portfolio projects aren't live or shareable. A real portfolio is a list of working URLs, not screenshots.
- There's no discovery process. A firm quote without a detailed scope conversation means guessing, or planned underdelivery.
- They own the tools, not the code. If the deliverable is an account on Lovable they control, you don't own what was built.
- They promise a fixed output with no revision cycles. Good software always requires iteration.
DIY, hire, or hybrid?
Hire if your project needs to be live in the next four weeks and you don't have time to develop foundational prompting skills. Budget $3,000–$8,000 for a genuine MVP.
DIY if you have six to eight weeks, a willingness to learn, and a budget under $100/month. Start with our Build track and the tool directory. The learning curve is real, but you'll understand exactly what was built and be able to extend it yourself.
Hybrid, often the smartest choice: build a rough prototype yourself in Lovable or Bolt, then hire a vibe coder for two or three days to clean up the architecture, fix the auth, and make it production-ready. You pay less because you've done the messy middle, and you hand over something coherent.
