Mailchimp is the email marketing platform your accountant uses. It’s been around since 2001, it has name recognition that borders on generic trademark territory, and it does… a lot. Perhaps too much. What started as a simple email tool has bloated into a marketing platform that tries to do websites, social posting, CRM, and e-commerce alongside its core email functionality.

Overview

The core email experience is still competent. The drag-and-drop email builder works, the template library is extensive, and deliverability is generally solid thanks to decades of infrastructure investment. You can build campaigns, set up basic automations, segment your audience, and track opens and clicks. The fundamentals are there.

But the interface has become a maze. Navigating between campaigns, automations, audience segments, and the half-dozen other product areas Mailchimp has tacked on feels like wandering through an IKEA without the arrows on the floor. Settings are buried in unexpected places. The automation builder, while functional, is clunky compared to ConvertKit’s visual approach.

The Intuit acquisition in 2021 accelerated the bloat. Mailchimp now pushes you toward features you didn’t ask for — social posting tools, a basic website builder, postcards. Each addition makes the core email experience slightly harder to find and slightly more confusing to navigate.

For non-technical founders, the learning curve is moderate. You can send a basic campaign quickly, but building anything sophisticated — segmented automations, conditional content, proper A/B testing — requires patience and probably a YouTube tutorial or three.

Who It’s For

Honestly? Mailchimp is for founders who already know it and don’t want to migrate. If you’ve been using it for years and your workflows are set up, the switching cost might not be worth it. It’s also acceptable if you need basic email campaigns and nothing more — a monthly newsletter to your customer base, transactional updates, simple drip sequences.

It retains an edge in e-commerce integrations. The Shopify, WooCommerce, and BigCommerce connections are mature and well-tested. If you’re running an e-commerce business and email is a secondary channel (not your primary growth engine), Mailchimp handles that use case adequately.

For everyone else starting fresh in 2026: look elsewhere. Beehiiv is better for newsletters. ConvertKit is better for creator businesses. Both are cheaper and more focused.

Pricing

The free plan has been gutted repeatedly over the years. It now covers just 500 contacts and 1,000 monthly sends — barely enough to evaluate the platform. The Essentials plan at $13/month gets you to 500 contacts with decent features. Standard is $20/month for 500 contacts with automations and A/B testing.

Here’s the catch: pricing scales aggressively with contact count. At 10,000 contacts, Essentials is $87/month and Standard is $135/month. Mailchimp also counts unsubscribed contacts against your total unless you manually archive them. This contact-count pricing model feels punitive compared to platforms that charge by features or sends.

The Verdict

Mailchimp is a perfectly adequate email tool weighed down by feature creep, aggressive pricing, and better alternatives. It’s not bad — it’s just not the right choice for most founders starting today. The platform is coasting on brand recognition while competitors build tighter, more focused experiences. If you’re already invested in Mailchimp’s ecosystem and your workflows run smoothly, there’s no urgent reason to migrate. But if you’re choosing an email platform in 2026, start with Beehiiv or ConvertKit and save yourself the frustration.
